Metal braces are a classic and reliable way to correct even the worst orthodontic issues. However, since they’ve been around for so long, there has been plenty of time for myths and rumors to be created about them. Will your braces set off a metal detector? Can you kiss with braces? Are you too old for braces? If you’ve ever wondered any of these questions, this blog is for you! Read on as we bust six of the most common myths about traditional braces.

1.) Myth #1: Braces Will Set Off a Metal Detector

Worried about setting off a metal detector with your braces as you approach security at an airport or concert? Don’t be! Braces are made of metal, but it’s a type of material that will not set off metal detectors.

2.) Myth #2: Braces Will Change The Way You Talk

In TV and movies, the nerdy teenager with braces and freckles always seems to have a lisp. This is just an exaggeration for the silver screen! While your mouth will need time to adjust to the presence of braces, which will change how you talk, it’s only temporary.

3.) Myth #3: Your Braces Will Get Tangled & Stuck If You Kiss Someone

There’s no need to worry about locking lips with braces. Another common gag about braces that Hollywood employs is that when two braces-wearers kiss, their braces get stuck together. Fortunately, braces are designed in such a way that this is a very difficult task. Just make sure to be gentle and take it slow to prevent accidental cuts or enamel damage.

4.) Myth #4: You’re More Likely to Get Struck By Lightning with Braces

At first, it would make sense that having metal braces would increase your chances of getting struck by lightning. However, similar to the metal detector myth, braces are made of materials that don’t attract electricity.

5.) Myth #5: Only Kids Get Braces

Braces are typically associated with the teenage years, but you’re never too old to get a straightened smile. If your orthodontic problems have gradually gotten worse over the years, or you didn’t have the chance to get braces as a child, getting braces as an adult is not as uncommon as you might thing!

6.) Myth #6 Braces Will Straighten Your Teeth Permanently

The aim of any orthodontic treatment is to give you a healthier, straighter smile for life. However, braces alone don’t have that power. That’s why once you’ve completed your treatment, you’ll need a retainer. You’ll need to wear this small appliance in accordance with your orthodontist’s instructions if you want your newly straightened pearly whites to last a lifetime.

Do you have more questions or concerns about braces? Then it’s time to call your orthodontist! They can clear up any more myths and help you feel more confident pursuing a healthier smile.
